Gottfried-Salzmann-Saal

From Salzburg to France

Salzmann was born in Saalfelden in 1943, attended the Vienna Academy of Art and came to Paris while still a student, an experience that haunted him for the rest of his life. Evidently the characteristic French mixture of sensualism and rationality greatly suited his own artistic preferences.

Major 2003 Retrospective in the Museum

Hardly any other Salzburg artist has managed to achieve such resounding fame as Salzmann. For his 60th birthday the Salzburg Museum organised a retrospective exhibition of the artist’s oeuvre including the key work complexes; it was held in the former main building on Museumsplatz.

Donation to the Museum

Although he has lived and worked for several decades in France, he has never lost contact with his old home of Salzburg. In past years, Gottfried Salzmann has donated a large number of pictures to the Salzburg Museum, shown in alternating sequence in the room named after him on the 3rd floor of the Neue Residenz. They can be viewed by appointment during opening times.
