Applied Arts and Everyday Culture

From the very beginning, items from the fields of applied arts and everyday culture were collected. In the twentieth century, these objects were long subsumed under the term ‘arts and crafts’. The current name of the collection, ‘Applied Arts and Everyday Culture’, was first used in the twenty-first century and attempts to better capture the heterogeneity of the collection. At the same time, however, the category of Design is not reflected in the name of the collection.

In this area, Salzburg Museum has a diverse collection of ceramic objects by Salzburg ceramists. Here you will find works by Gudrun Baudisch-Wittke (1907–1982), Ignaz Fiala (1875–1958), Heinz Husiatynski (1944–1995), Eva Klinger-Römhild (1945–2013), Arno Lehmann (1905–1973), Ute Lehmann (1960–2015), Luise Spannring (1894–1982), and others. The collection also includes sacred artworks made of silver, ivory, and rock crystal. The works span the period from the fourteenth century to the twenty-first century.

The range of everyday objects that we use regularly has become vast and seemingly endless. For this reason, Salzburg Museum has set itself the task – partly for reasons of space – of not collecting everything, but instead focusing on items connected to Salzburg. This section of the collection thus offers a varied picture of life in Salzburg throughout different eras.

In the Design section, the collection primarily comprises various pieces of furniture designed and built by architects or artists, often for specific use in Salzburg. The collection features furniture based on designs by architects such as Wunibald Theodor Deininger (1879–1963), Josef Hawranek (1904–1982), Clemens Holzmeister (1886–1938), Robert Kotas (1904–1973), as well as the painter Georg Jung (1899–1957), and everyday designs by Carl Auböck (1900–1957).

In addition, the collection contains glass objects by Kay Krasnitzky, born Otto Erich Krasnitzky (1914–1978), and electrical appliances designed by various designers for Braun, Olivetti, Paillard, and others.
