Our highlights include the helmet from Pass Lueg, the beaked flagon from Dürrnberg, the dial of an ancient astronomical clock, and, most recently, the hoard found in Neumarkt. Unique organic artefacts originate from prehistoric copper and salt mining. Funeral objects give us an insight into beliefs about the afterlife and religious worlds. Less spectacular objects from waste layers and cesspits of the Roman and early modern city allow us to recreate what everyday life was like in Salzburg, supplemented by anthropological and archaeozoological finds. Coins unearthed from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the modern period reveal aspects of economic history that go beyond written records.

The collection focuses on prehistoric mining in Pinzgau, Pongau, and Tennengau, as well as the dense Roman settlement in the city of Salzburg and the Flachgau region. Objects from cemeteries, castles, and the episcopal seat and residence date back to the Middle Ages and the modern era. The collection is growing mainly as a result of archaeological excavations carried out during intensive construction work in the city and province of Salzburg.

Archaeological objects provide a direct glimpse into a fascinating past. We enter into a dialogue with people who shaped Salzburg long before our time. How did they live? What did they believe in? How did they work? Where did they come from and where did they go? What did they die of? What tools did they use and for what purpose? And why? We let objects from over 10,000 years ago speak for themselves – even if some questions remain (for now!) unanswered.
