The exhibition in the Kunsthalle of the Salzburg Museum is dedicated to the biographical and artistic connections between Alfred Kubin and Salzburg. Around 100 works by the renowned Austrian artist, drawn from the extensive Kubin collection of the Upper Austrian State Museum, are on display. This major project marks the beginning of the exhibition series “Distinguished Guests” (Edle Gäste), through which the Salzburg Museum welcomed important national and international art collections in 2019 for collaborative projects exploring Salzburg’s art history.

The exhibition at the Kunsthalle of the Salzburg Museum examines Alfred Kubin’s relationship with Salzburg. The artist, who was born in 1877 in Leitmeritz, Northern Bohemia, spent much of his childhood and youth in Salzburg before embarking on his artistic career in Munich. In 1906, he moved to Zwickledt in Upper Austria, where he lived and worked for more than five decades. After an intensive and highly productive career as a draftsman and illustrator, he passed away there in August 1959.
