The exhibition “Playing with History” explores the history of toys and games for visitors of different generations. How has the past been depicted in games and toys since the postwar period? What connections can be drawn to objects and sources from the past, as well as to scholarly research, to illustrate the influence of games and toys on how different generations perceive the past? Toys reflect societal notions of bygone eras that are passed down to children. Since the post-war period, most children’s rooms have been filled with knights, princesses, pirates, “Native Americans*”, dinosaurs, musketeers, Romans, and much more—all of which, embedded in a wide variety of forms and narrative genres, interpret and present the past in a very specific way.
