About the exhibition
To complement the 360° view of the city of Salzburg depicted in the large circular painting, Johann Michael Sattler and his son Hubert created paintings featuring views of cities and natural wonders from around the world. These images, which Johann Michael Sattler called “kosmoramen,” allowed the public to get a close-up look at places that were otherwise out of their reach.
On the upper floor, we display cityscapes from the second half of the 19th century—a time when many people left their old homelands due to revolutionary upheavals or impoverishment, hoping to find their fortune in the New World.
On the lower floor, Hubert Sattler brings the power of water to life. Whether it’s the calm sea in the port of Lisbon, roaring waterfalls and serene river landscapes in the USA, or the deep, cool lakes of the Austrian mountains.
