About the exhibition
Rome is considered to be the birthplace of the Baroque. It was the last artistic movement to spread throughout Europe—and beyond, all the way to South America. It was meant to be grand, classical, and impressive—and an eloquent ambassador of Catholicism. The Rossacher Collection preserves several designs, or contemporary copies of designs, for works that would become key pieces of this artistic era. Works by Gianlorenzo Bernini, the preeminent artist of the time, and his studio are represented, as are those of his rival, Alessandro Algardi. A sketch by Peter Paul Rubens, who built a bridge between the Baroque and the North, showcases his most important Roman commission. The exhibition aims to provide insight into the sometimes very protracted history of commissions and creation behind a selection of artworks.
