About the museum

Experience Salzburg’s landmark up close!

The Fortress Museum was opened in 1952 in the ‘Hoher Stock’ (Upper Floor). It is part of Salzburg Museum and one of the most visited museums in Austria. The first ideas for a museum at the fortress date back to the time of the First World War. Since then, the fortress has developed into an increasingly popular tourist attraction. After losing its original function, the site was used as a depot and barracks.

Bus: Rathaus stop, 5-minute walk to the FestungsBahn funicular or 20-minute walk to Hohensalzburg Fortress

Please note that the fortress has many steps and inclines, which make barrier-free access difficult. The outdoor facilities of Hohensalzburg Fortress are fully accessible via the Festungsbahn funicular. However, the interior of the fortress is not barrier-free.

1,000 Years of Building History

The museum was newly conceived and designed in 2019. Featuring selected objects from the medieval collections of Salzburg Museum and expansive media installations, the Fortress Museum offers insights into the history and function of the fortress as well as the development of the castle. The tour through a total of 13 rooms is organised as a sequence of themes. They explore various aspects of the Middle Ages and shed light on the people and events in the art, culture, and history of Salzburg.

The labels in the Fortress Museum are written in simple language to make the art accessible to as many visitors as possible.
