Items in the collection with a turbulent history form the starting point for an exhibition that places the provenance research of Salzburg Museum in dialogue with contemporary projects on the subject of the Nazi era and cultures of remembrance. Works by artists Sophie Thun, Tatiana Leconte, and Thomas Geiger are displayed alongside pieces from Salzburg Museum that have been physically restituted and those that have not yet been returned.

Gerhard Garstenauer (1925–2016) is considered one of the most important Austrian architects of the second half of the twentieth century. His extensive estate has been accessible at Salzburg Museum since 2010. 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Gerhard Garstenauer’s birth – an occasion that alone warrants a comprehensive tribute.

DomQuartier Salzburg Nordoratorium

500 years after the Salzburg Peasants’ War, this exhibition illustrates the living conditions of peasants, miners, and mercenaries within the feudal system of the sixteenth century. The focus is on the political and ideological instrumentalisation of the subject in twentieth-century art history.
