On 30 April 1938, a book burning took place at Residenzplatz in Salzburg. This National Socialist staging was one of only a few events of its kind in what was then Austria. Similar book burnings occurred only in Thalgau and in Carinthia. However, only the Salzburg book burning was reported on by The New York Times.

To mark the 80th anniversary of this event, the City of Salzburg will erect a memorial. In cooperation with the Salzburg University Library, the Salzburg Museum will shed light on the historical background of the book burnings. From 30 April to 8 July 2018, texts providing information about the book burnings in Berlin and Salzburg will be displayed in the courtyard of the Neue Residenz. In addition, from 9 April to 25 May 2018, the Salzburg University Library will present an exhibition on this topic in the windows of its main library building in Hofstallgasse.
