Depictions of women play a prominent role in Arik Brauer’s body of work. In this exhibition, the Salzburg Museum explores the theme of women’s fates for the first time. Aesthetically influenced by his “Old Master”-style painting technique, characterized by luminous, blending colors, the artist focuses on both historical and contemporary existential questions regarding the fates of women. The spectrum ranges from archaic, patriarchal narratives of the Old Testament (the stoning of women) to recent historical events such as the resistance group “The White Rose,” the “rubble women,” or the current discussion and events surrounding the status of women in Islam. In his provocative works, Arik Brauer reveals himself not only as an unwavering humanist but also as an artist committed to women’s rights.
