2025 marks the 500th anniversary of the uprising of Salzburg’s tradesmen, miners, and farmers – commonly known as the Salzburg Peasants’ War – against their sovereign, Prince Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg.
The visiting exhibition planned for this anniversary in the North Oratory of the Cathedral aims to illustrate the historical events, shed light on the living conditions of farmers, miners, and mercenaries in the sixteenth century, and focus on the art-historical examination of the subject from the perspective of its instrumentalisation by political ideologies in the twentieth century.
