Salzburg Museum – Gastspiel (Guest Appearance): A Retrospective

Gastspiel (Guest Appearance)

A Museum on tour

13 Locations | 250.000 visitors

The construction-related closure of the Neue Residenz, the Salzburg Museum’s primary location, has been anything but a period of standstill. On the contrary: since late 2023, our ‘Salzburg Museum – Guest Appearance’ series has maintained an outstanding presence across the city and state of Salzburg, showcasing highly specific themes and collection objects at new venues.

We have had the pleasure of welcoming around 250,000 visitors to our guest exhibitions. This success is due in no small part to our curatorial team, who developed these special exhibitions in close content-driven and site-specific collaboration with our host partner initiatives.

Our Guest Appearance Highlights

A Journey Through Our Guest Appearance Series

The rich palette spanned from Sattler’s ‘Sacred Places’ in the DomQuartier Salzburg, through “New Images. New Epoch” at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and ‘The Museum of (Non)Restitution’ at the Salzburger Kunstverein, to ‘Masterpieces of Furniture Art’ at the Mining and Gothic Museum Leogang. ‘Garstenauer One Hundred’ at the Architekturhaus was recently awarded the Cultural Poster Prize. Emanating throughout from our own collections and curatorial excellence, the series has since been emulated by numerous museums as a best-practice model in their own right!

It is remarkable that so many galleries, art associations, and museums agreed to join forces with us during the construction-related closure of the Neue Residenz. We have learned a great deal from one another and together created something that speaks to the spirit and culture of togetherness in Salzburg. This was a truly gratifying experience for all of us and a testament to the true gift of collaboration!
