The exhibition is based on the extensive private collection of devotional images from the collection of Ingrid Loimer of Salzburg. In line with the 2019 focus on the Virgin Mary in several museums throughout the city and province of Salzburg, the special exhibition at the Volkskunde Museum in the Monatsschlössl in Hellbrunn is also dedicated to this theme: On display are small devotional images made of paper that depict the veneration of the Virgin Mary from around 1800 to the present day. The exhibition’s focal points explore the forms of popular piety, the various Marian apparitions that serve as the starting point for this veneration and its documentation, their location in different pilgrimage sites, and their continued influence in various Marian movements.
Both the exhibition and the accompanying catalog examine the phenomenon of this unique veneration, which continues to shape the lives of pilgrims to this day.
