The collaboration between cultural institutions in the city and province of Salzburg, as outlined in the 2018 Cultural Development Plan of the Province of Salzburg, has inspired the “Noble Guests” event at the Salzburg Museum.

In cooperation with the Leogang Mining & Gothic Museum and the Schloss Ritzen Local History Museum, the Salzburg Museum is exhibiting Gothic sculpture for the first time since the end of the “Ars Sacra” exhibition. With a focus on MARY, all three institutions are presenting a cross-section of the scenic and figurative depictions of the Mother of God.

The guests from Leogang—among them, among others, an important Madonna of the Lion from 1340, a high-quality Madonna in a Garment of Ears of Corn, and a Salzburg Madonna in the soft style—meet highlights from the museum’s own collection. Thus, the Rauris Altar (1490–1500) and the well-known panel painting of the Holy Mary in a Garment of Ears of Corn (c. 1495, attributed to Rueland Frueauf the Elder), as well as small-scale Pietà depictions and the Nonnberg Madonna (1350–1370), will be on display together in the columned hall of the New Residence. This illustrious gathering offers the opportunity to view a collection of small sculptures of outstanding quality, special loans, and much-requested objects from the Salzburg Museum’s holdings.
