Salzburg Museum’s “Sculpture” collection includes a shrine that one might also expect to find in the applied arts collection under the category of “furniture”. The “reliquary shrine” from the Bürgerspitalskirche Church in Salzburg – sometimes also referred to as the “Holy Sepulchre” – is one of the most significant pieces of late Gothic furniture in Salzburg due to its highly refined, elaborate, and precious design, richly gilded carvings, and figurative reliefs.
According to the latest research and comparisons, a number of chests and cabinets originating from the Lungau region of Salzburg feature similar ornamentation: around 1455, a workshop emerged in Lungau that produced exceptionally ornate pieces of furniture for that time, including chests, cabinets, and church furnishings.
The Museum of Mining and Gothic Art Leogang will present a number of important late Gothic furniture pieces from museum and private collections, centred around the shrine, which document the high quality of the Salzburg pieces and point to their origin in the Lungau region.
