ADMISSION

Fortress Museum | Hohensalzburg Fortress

The Fortress Museum was opened in 1952 in the so called "Hoher Stock". It is part of the Salzburg Museum and one of the most visited museums in Austria. The first ideas for a museum at the fortress date back to the time of the First World War. Since then, the fortress has developed into an increasingly popular tourist attraction. Previously, the site had been used as a depot and barracks since the 19th century. The museum was redesigned for the last time in 2019.

The newly conceived and redesigned fortress museum provides insights into the history and function of the fortress as well as the development of the castle with selected objects from the Salzburg Museum's medieval collections and expansive media installations. The tour through a total of 13 rooms is designed as a sequence of themes. They convey various aspects of the Middle Ages and shed light on people and events in the art, culture and history of Salzburg.
