Salzburg is Austria’s leading centre for photography, thanks to its collections, institutions, and wide range of photographic activities. At the invitation of the Republic of Austria, Rainer Iglar and Michael Mauracher of the Fotohof Salzburg have developed the concept for a large-scale photographic project that, through the participation of numerous photographers, aims to provide a comprehensive documentary portrait of Austria. In addition to a dedicated publication project and several accompanying events, the Salzburg Museum will provide a museum context for the overall project. The exhibition will examine the practice of documentary photography within both the broader history of photography and the specific traditions of Austrian photography and art history.

This approach enables the Salzburg Museum not only to offer insights into its extensive collection of historical photographs but also to create a new programmatic dialogue between its collection and contemporary perspectives. In doing so, the project establishes a productive exchange between historical visual records and current photographic approaches to documenting society and culture.
