RESTORATION OF THE SALZBURG CARILLON
After more than 300 years, the Salzburg Carillon was subject to an overall restoration by the renowned Viennese metal restorer and conservator Mag Elisabeth Krebs. To do this, not only all the bells had to be transported to Vienna, but also the entire drive mechanism had to be disassembled into around 3,500 individual parts. Approximately 7,500 working hours were needed for the restoration.
At the end of October 2010, the entire carillon with its mechanism was brought back to Salzburg and reinstalled in the tower. Two special firms ensured that from now on the carillon can be driven both electrically and mechanically. Ing Hans Predl installed the electrical control system with drive motor, and master metalworker Wolfgang Auer got the historical drive with weights and hand crank going again. The total restoration costs amounted to around € 400,000.
For the re-opening on 28 January 2011 at 11 am, Erich Schmidt programmed “Das klinget so herrlich" from “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the years prior to the restoration it was the custom that the Salzburg Carillon played a new melody every month and on special occasions.
DM DROGERIE MARKT SUPPORTED THE RESTORATION
35 BELLS FOR 35 YEARS OF DM
On the occasion of its 35th anniversary in 2011, the firm of dm drogerie markt with headquarters in Salzburg-Wals assumed the sponsorship as patron of the 35 bells of the Salzburg Carillon. Dipl. Betriebswirt (economist) Harald Bauer from dm's executive board made a statement on the opening of the carillon on 28 January 2011 saying, “As one of the leading business operations in Salzburg, we wish to make a contribution to this landmark in our city.” At the same time, Bauer announced that dm had raised the contribution to € 35,000. As Bauer said, “35 bells and 35 years of dm drogerie markt – this fits!”
